Peru to Declare National Emergency After Fatal Demonstrations Targeting New President
The nation will soon declare a state of emergency after one fatality occurred and numerous law enforcement personnel sustained injuries in widespread protests targeting the newly installed president, who assumed power just days ago.

The nation's premier said late on Thursday that the government would declare the state of emergency in Lima imminently and crafting a comprehensive plan to tackle rising insecurity.
Wednesday evening's demonstration â called by gen Z protesters, transport workers and civil groups â represented the most recent in ongoing protests against corruption and rising crime, culminating in the sudden removal of the previous administration.
Demonstration Developments
Thousands of protesters amassed around the country, with significant confrontations occurring at the legislative building. Law enforcement deployed crowd control measures while some protesters hurled fireworks, rocks and burning objects.
"All must leave!" demonstrators shouted when they reached congress and tried to tear down metal barriers surrounding the structure.
Casualties and Investigation
A 32-year-old man, Eduardo Mauricio Ruiz, was killed during the protest and his death would be investigated, stated a human rights representative, a representative from the country's ombudsman's office. Peru's prosecutor's office said Ruiz died after being shot.

JerĂ expressed regret over Ruiz's death in a post on X, saying the death would be "objectively" investigated. He attributed the unrest to "criminal elements exploiting peaceful protests".
"Legal consequences will be severe," he said.
Following legislative discussions regarding the demonstrations, JerĂ said he would ask congress for "authority to legislate on public safety issues".
Proposed Reforms
The administration identified correctional system overhaul as a priority, though specific authority details remained unspecified.
Recently installed security chief Vicente Tiburcio told the unicameral congress that authorities would pursue extensive law enforcement restructuring, noting significant injury counts among both officers and citizens and multiple individuals faced arrest.

Wednesday's protests were a bellwether for how JerĂ's nascent presidency â concluding with upcoming electoral proceedings â could play out.
JerĂ, 38 has promised to make crime his top priority but has faced a number of scandals, including corruption allegations and previously examined misconduct claims. The president refuted all allegations and expressed willingness to cooperate with any corruption investigation.

Boluarte's government encountered mass demonstrations after she assumed power in late 2022, resulting in multiple fatalities and catastrophic approval rating decline, which oscillated between 2% and 4% in the days leading up to her ouster.
The legislative body previously led by the current president faces comparable public disapproval, with a single-digit approval rating.
